Healthy Community Living (HCL) is a suite of programs that support people with disabilities to live and participate fully in their communities.
The HCL Program provides trainings to organizations and individuals who want to facilitate curriculum-based workshops with community members with disabilities. The suite of workshops explore how health, wellness, and community participation goals can enhance quality of life. Workshop participants learn skills and receive facilitated support to put their goals into action.

“Although it presents as a curriculum, it also serves as an information and resource hub. The material it contains has been particularly useful to the youth that I have worked with, in part, because of the relevancy and authentic representation of the creators. The online format provides the possibility to refer to material while facilitating conversation.”

“Due to having participated in the program, I no longer take on the guilt of having to say ‘no’ due to the importance of my mental well-being.”

“You have a goal, but you have these steps or objectives to reach that goal. And that’s what the videos really showed–how to get to a big goal by going step-by-step.”

“I’ve worked with a few people around the Healthy Community Living content who start with it from kind of an evaluation mindset. They say things like, ‘Hey, this piece could be useful to this group of people’ or ‘I could see how this information might help others.’ Then, about halfway through, they come to this sort of realization like, ‘Oh, this information could help me!’ or ‘This workshop is for me!’ and they start to see how it might affect them or their life, and I think that’s really awesome.”

“Many of the consumers have chronic medical conditions and healthy eating was critical to them maintaining their health. Eating healthy began with the group deciding what healthy snacks the group would consume. Fresh fruit, yogurt and fresh vegetables ranked high among the consumers. Training each other to read food labels and learning how to effectively comparison shop were other related topics the group chose to pursue.”

“It was neat when you got to see participants helping each other out and giving each other feedback, and sharing some of their personal stories with the group and building that trust.”
