What is a Computer?
- This focus area will introduce you to computers and similar technology
- It will help you gain a better understanding of computers and the terms used for computer parts
- It is intended for people who are newer to using computers and may not know the different types or the names for their parts
Choosing Technology
- Choosing the right device for you can be challenging
- Sometimes it helps to try some devices before getting your own
- There are several places you might go to learn and try out a range of devices
Hardware Terms
- Once you have the device for you, learning some of the basic terms is important
- Many modern pieces of technology, such as a desktop computer, a laptop, a smartphone, or a tablet, can do the same things, like connecting to the internet, playing music, watching movies, or surfing the web
- Devices are made up of different pieces of hardware
- Hardware refers to a physical object, such as a computer case, phone, or keyboard
- If you can pick it up and show somebody, even if it is turned off or broken, it is hardware
- We will review the most common pieces of hardware used with your device
Software Terms
- Learning the basic terms when referring to your computer or device is important
- Software is a term that refers to something that runs or plays on your computer or device
- Software might be a photo editing program, the screen that pops up when you turn on your computer, or an app that plays music
- Other terms for software might be program, application, or app

How Do I Use a Computer?
- This focus area is intended for people who are new to using a computer or device but have some sense of how to use the computer or device for basic tasks
- Once you have a device, learning how to use it is important
Setting Up Your Device
- Figuring out what programs you already have on your device and how to get programs you would like to add is an important first step
- Once you know what is already on the device, and how to use them, then you can add more programs or apps, also known as applications, to change what your device can do
Programs
- Once your device is on, and set up the way you want it, you can begin using programs
- There are lots of programs you can use and they all serve different purposes
- Many programs require an internet connection to download or run

Using the Internet
- This focus area is intended for people who can complete basic tasks on their computer, tablet or smartphone and are ready to use their device on the internet
- Once you are connected to the internet there are a number of things you can do
- Many programs or apps simply can not function without having an internet connection
- We will cover connecting to the internet and a few things you can do once you are online
Connecting
- Before you start using the internet, you need to make sure your device, whether it is a desktop computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone, is actively connected to the internet
- Connecting to the internet requires getting set-up, and making sure you have a few pieces of key equipment
Surfing the Web
- Once your device is connected to the internet, you may use it with many different programs and services
- The most common is using a web browser to explore the world wide web, allowing you to view and use web pages
- Keep in mind that many web services require you to create an account to participate on their website
- Sometimes the account is free, and other times, it might cost money
- When you visit a new website, make sure to read any warnings that have to do with creating an account
- Never enter personal information or credit card information if you do not understand how and why it is being collected
Email, Messaging & Apps
- Email or e-mail is electronic mail
- It is the sending and receiving of typed messages from one screen to another
- Email is usually handled by a webmail service like Gmail or Yahoo mail, or software installed on your computer, such as Microsoft Outlook
- Email was originally developed for sending simple text messages, but has become more powerful
- Documents can be attached to email messages, allowing files to be sent from person to person
- Since email was not originally designed to handle large files, sending large documents, pictures or video can be challenging
Messaging & Apps
There are many other tools for communicating and sharing information, including:
- Instant Messaging
- Photo sharing
- Videos
- Music
- Games
- Streaming and watching TV shows
- Mapping
- Shopping
Social Media
- Social media is the term used to refer to websites and applications that allow their users to create and share content with each other
- On social media you might share words, pictures, or videos
- There are lots of ways to interact with others online through social media
- Examples of social media include posting comments under news stories or YouTube videos, and putting comments or status updates on Facebook or Twitter
Safety & Ethics
- There are different ways to be safe when using the internet
- It can be important to have security programs, like firewalls and antivirus software, running to protect against programs and people that want to harm your computer
- The best antivirus software in the world cannot stop you from handing out your own personal information or sharing things that could infect other people’s computers or devices
- Remember, it is important to be aware of how you are sharing your personal information
- Only provide personal information and credit card information to sites you trust

Assistive Technology
- This focus area is intended for people who have assistive technology needs related to using a computer, technology or similar device
- Small modifications, gizmos, adaptive gadgets, and other assistive technology can all be very helpful
- Assistive technology is not a solution to every challenge, but it can enhance what you are able to do independently and reduce challenges
- There are many types of assistive technology
Assistive Hardware
- Different designs of computers and add-on components, known as assistive hardware, exist to expand the ways people can use their computer and devices
- You will not learn about every type of assistive hardware, but you should gain an understanding of some of the options for assistive hardware that are out there
- This may help you think about how assistive hardware may fit into your life
Assistive Software
- There are many types of software and applications that can improve the usefulness of a computer or device
- These are known as assistive software
- Some assistive software is installed on your computer for you, while others need to be installed
- Occasionally special devices are required so the software can function correctly
State Assistive Technology
- If you are not sure about your assistive technology needs you might visit your state’s assistive technology program
- Every U.S. state and territory has a State Assistive Technology Act Program
- State AT programs provide information, advice and support about assistive technology and information about tools for education, employment, home life, sports and recreation
- Programs also offer demonstrations, loans and gifting of used assistive technology
- Services are designed to provide users the opportunity to try before you buy as well as suggest technology to solve problems.
