Building Support
“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.”
— Helen Keller, Disability Advocate
Introduction
Pursuing goals and making life changes may lead to new problems. You will need to address these to reach your goal.
- Figuring out options to deal with problems on your own can be difficult
- However, you do not have to solve them by yourself! You can find support to reach your goal
- In this session, you will identify the supports you may need to reach your goal
Solutions & Supports
Now that you’ve thought about potential problems, thinking about your needs and supports can help you make a plan to reach your goal.
Solutions to problems often come from having support. There are many kinds of support:
- Some support may come from family and friends
- Other support may come from peers, who can be people that have similar goals or similar life experience
- Some people get support online like family, friends or peers providing encouragement through email or social media
- Support may be information or technology that makes reaching goals easier
Possible Pathways
Considering your possible problems and your possible support needs can help you make a plan to reach your goal.
- A plan is like a pathway with a starting, middle and endpoint
- Like a journey, you may want to make sure you are ready to begin and then choose the best route
- Ideally, using support to solve problems will follow the easiest and quickest route to achieving your goal
Getting Started
- Problems are discouraging. That is normal
- Remember, you do not have to solve all the problems at once
- Once you solve some problems, other problems might just disappear
- For example, if depression and pain are problems, your mood might improve if you have less pain. Less pain equals less depression — the domino effect!
- Having a to-do list is a great start toward reaching your goal
- This section discusses how you can reach your goal by paying attention to: your time, your health and your progress
