The Power of Advocacy:
Getting What You Want, Need & Deserve
“I learned a long time ago the wisest thing I can do is be on my own side, be an advocate for myself and others like me.”
– Maya Angelou
Introduction
- Advocacy is a set of skills you can use to ask someone for something you want, need or deserve
- It often involves convincing someone in authority to act on your behalf
- Depending on what you want, your ability to communicate effectively and problem solve may determine whether you are an effective advocate
Advocating for Desires
Making a request has three important steps:
- Identify whom to ask
- Determine when to ask
- Figure out how to ask
Advocating for Needs
- Putting your request in a letter is a good way to communicate with people who are hard to contact
- Keep copies of your letters – they provide a record of referral
- If you are advocating for your rights, letters document the process you followed
Advocating for Rights
- Making your request and following it up with letters and meetings usually will solve the problem
- You may want to get some help if you are requesting a need or a right
- If it is a need, you may get help and advice from many people including coworkers, human resource personnel, family, and friends
